Mountain Moments by Felina
Dutch Photographer capturing light and mountain moments.
My name is Judith Mijderwijk. I am a professional photographer from the Netherlands, but I live in Austria. I often travel through the Swiss, Italian, and French Alps. I speak Dutch, German, Italian, and English fluently, enabling me to easily connect with people from many countries and backgrounds.
I grew up in an artist’s family, spending much of my childhood painting and drawing with my mom’s art supplies. When I was nine years old, I experienced the mountains for the first time during a holiday in the Swiss canton of Ticino and instantly fell in love. Only a year later, I received my first camera and became fascinated by capturing landscapes, always searching for perfect compositions, colours, and light.
Over time, photography - especially mountain photography - became my true passion. It even led me to move from the flat lands of the Netherlands to the mountainous region of Eastern Tyrol in Austria. Nowadays I frequently spend the night alone at altitudes around 3,000 meters, under the starry sky, waiting for breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, or staying awake to photograph the Milky Way. I chase ideal weather conditions, venture onto glaciers and into their ice caves to document their vanishing beauty, and explore both vast landscapes and abstract details within them.
Alongside mountain photography, I have also specialized in wildlife and portrait photography. More recently, I have combined my love of landscapes with portraiture by photographing wedding couples in the mountains, capturing their special moments against stunning Alpine backdrops. During the winter months, I also take photos of sled dog races, and this year I had the special opportunity to photograph horse races on the frozen Lake St. Moritz at the famous White Turf event.
Meanwhile, my photographs have been exhibited internationally in Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and Germany, in several exhibitions and renowned galleries.
Every photo excursion is an adventure. I never know exactly what I’ll find: clouds, sunshine, rain, thunder, falling rocks, wildlife, or even unexpected encounters with interesting people, despite often being alone. And every time, the same question arises: Will I return with the images I had envisioned? In mountain photography, you often don’t get what you were looking for, but instead something entirely different. Nevertheless, it might be precisely those surprises that keep drawing me uphill again and again.
In the mountains, I feel most at home. There, I find my peace, my freedom, and my inspiration.
